Junior Cycle

CURRICULUM

JUNIOR CYCLE The New Junior Cycle Student Award is being gradually introduced into the junior cycle curriculum over the forthcoming years. It will consist of a three-year programme leading to the Junior Cycle Student Award at the end of Third Year. September 2014 sees the introduction of the new English syllabus for the JCSA. Other subjects will follow the established Junior Certificate curriculum for the moment. Please check out, by clicking here on www.ncca.ie for further information on the new Junior Cycle Student Award. In First Year, students sample ALL Junior Cycle subjects (including TWO Foreign Languages) on offer in the school. Those subjects are:
English	Science	French	Art	Religion
Gaeilge	History	German	Music	CSPE-(Civil, Social & Political Education)
Maths	Geography	Business Studies	Home Economics

SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education)*
PE (Physical Education)*
Computer Studies*

*These subjects are not examined in the Junior Certificate/JCSA but do form part of the three-year Junior Cycle

There is one double period of PE per week for First Years. Each First Year class does Swimming during PE for one term during the year.

Students usually take eleven subjects for the Junior Certificate Examination.

Towards the end of First Year, students will be asked to make their choices for Second Year.

They will be asked to choose three subjects from the following two groups:

Group 1 French German Business

Group 2 Art Music Home Economics

Students usually choose one Foreign Language for the Junior Certificate.
It is important to remember that the language they choose at this stage will be the language they will continue to study for the Leaving Certificate.

Each student’s progress is closely monitored throughout the year. They will be regularly assessed in all subjects.

Mock Junior Certificate Exams are held in February for Third Year students

Parents/guardians will receive regular reports home.
